Routable topo map (with contour lines) focussed on bicycle tourists. GPS version and installer for Mapsource/Basecamp (Windows and Mac OSX / gmap format - use Javawa's Mapconverter to convert and install the mapsets). Europe (cycle map) Garmin's Europe Cycle Map? Not free, pay per download or microSD/SD versions. This is essentially the data you get on the government issue 1:50,000 topo maps. The road data comes from the GeoBase? This data at the moment does not have road names or address information, but the positional accuracy is very good (as compared to the StatsCan data set, which has road names and addresses, but poor accuracy). I have downloaded and installed the maps from the link you provided but there isn't any coverage in western BC in the download. The mapping installed as version 1.0 but I have seen other posts regarding version 1.1. Free Garmin GPS Maps. I remember my first search for free Garmin GPS maps had me pulling my hair out after spending hours trying to download them and getting them to work on my GPS, which is the one I list below, but the good news is that getting the maps is the easy part.

(*) Note about files for the GPS: due to the big amount of information contained in some maps, the file with all the map exceeds the maximun size allowed by memory cards used by devices in a single file (4GB), so it's necessary to install the map in the computer and then send to the card only the areas of our interest, so that resulting file does not exceed 4GB in size. You will find detailed information about how to install these maps in section Big size Maps.

(**) 'Errors' column files contain a set of files with different kinds of errors in OpenStreetMap data detected during the map generation, along with links to download the data and fix them easily. More information can be found in the file README_errors included in the download.

(**) Map types:

  • OSM Base Map: Map for general use. It contains roads, streets, tracks, paths and POI among other elements. Most appropriate for nüvi series satnavs.
  • Topographic map: It contains the same information than base map plus contour lines, which will give you information about terrain height and steepness. Suitable for outdoor activities, such as hicking, mountaineering, etc. Contour lines can be activated or deactivated as needed.
  • Map for Trucks: Map specially designed to be used in trucks, as it considers weight, height, etc. restrictions affecting these vehicles when calculating routes. Elements without importance for these vehicles have been removed from the map, to make it clearer. +Info
  • Base map with DEM: Map is rendered over a Digital Elevation Model, which enables showing hill shading, calculate route profiles and show 3D maps. +Info

Collaborate

OpenStreetmap is made by thousands of volunteers. The more we are, the best the map will be, and all of us will benefit of it. There are two ways you can collaborate:

Garmin Canada Maps Free

  • If you have a GPS you can log all your tracks and upload your data to OpenStreetMap. Here you have information to get started. You can also collaborate fixing the errors you detect in the maps, adding missing information to the existing data, etc.
  • Hosting OpenStreetMap data requieres powerfull servers, informatic staff, etc. All of it implies expenses, so monetary donations, even small ones, are also important. From here you can make your donations.
